Out of sight, peace of mind

Backing into traffic from a driveway can be nerve-wracking, dangerous and unavoidable if you don't have space to turn around.

Unless you have a turntable in your driveway.

That's right, a turntable, not unlike those used in train yards to move locomotives.

The scaled-down car version costs under $10,000. It can be installed in most paved in most paved driveways or garages in just a few hours, according to the manufacturer. Driveways with slight inclines aren't a problem provided there are no dips under the turntable.

The motorized turntable can rotate vehicles 180 degrees in 15 seconds. Available with 12- or 14- foot diameter turntables, it can handle cars, trucks, vans or SUVs weighing up to 5,000 pounds with a wheel base of up to 123".

The hydraulic rotator is installed in a 10" x 10" stainless steel base which must be sunk 10" into the pavement. This anchors the turntable and allows it to turn smoothly. The rotator attaches to a steel disk with segments that form the turntable.

A radio-controlled transmitter plugged into a 120-volt outlet controls the keyed switch that starts and stops the turntable.

For safety, the manufacturer recommends that the radio remote be removed and kept away from children when the device is not being used.
